- There was a cholera outbreak in a secondary school in Kaduna on Monday, June 4
- One student was reportedly lost to the outbreak
- Out of the 63 rushed to the General Hospital, 57 have reportedly been discharged while 6 are still on admission
Following
the outbreak of cholera at Government Girls Secondary School, Kawo,
Kaduna on Monday, June 4, that left one dead, six of the students are
still on admission while 57 others have been discharged.
The
state commissioner for health and human services, Dr Paul Manya Dogo,
disclosed this on Tuesday, June 5, while speaking in an interview,
Nigerian Tribune reports.
He said the state government and supporting partners have been able to put the situation under control.
”I
am just leaving the hospital where the children were taken to. The
situation has been brought under control and a lot of them already
discharged.
“63 of them were admitted to
the facility but only six of them are remaining and the hospital
management has assured us that they too may be discharged today.
“Sadly,
one of them died at a private hospital where her parents had taken her
to. That I think happened on Friday and it pained us," he said.
The
chief medical director, General Hospital Kawo, Dr Oyelami Akintunde
also said the students were responding to treatment and several of them
have been discharged.
He said: “They brought
42 on Monday morning and another 15 that same Monday night. They also
brought six on Tuesday morning totalling 63. Many of them have recovered
and discharged and even the remaining six will be discharged today.”
One
of the survivors (names withheld) appealed to the state government to
come to their rescue as facilities in the school are nothing to write
home about.
“We
have toilets but no water. Out tanks are not working so people defecate
anywhere they can find. The wells we are using too are not healthy but
we don’t have an option for now.
“We
don’t also have a dinning set to eat our food. They serve our food while
we sit and eat on the bare floor. The government needs to help us to
avoid a repeat”, she appealed.
Meanwhile, source previously reported that eight people reportedly lost their lives
and several others injured when armed bandits suspected to be cattle
rustlers attacked in Chikun local government area of Kaduna state.
The
state police command confirmed the incident which happened at Kurega
village, a border community with Birnin Gwari local government area.
The police also claimed to be on the trail of the attackers with a view to arresting them.
